Eid-ul-Azha celebrated

The Muslims of Bangladesh celebrated holy Eid-ul-Azha on Monday through sacrificing animals and praying to the Almighty for the purgation of soul and peace in life.
Millions of devotees attended the Eid congregations across the country and also prayed for unity of the Muslim Ummah.
Special prayers were offered at different Eidgahs and mosques for former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein who was executed on Saturday, when the Arab world observed the Islamic rituals of sacrifice.
Myriad sacrificial cattle were sacrificed after the Eid prayers, in commemoration of the attempt of Prophet Ibrahim (A) to sacrifice his dearest one, son Hazrat Ismail (A), to attain the nearness of Allah.
The devotees exchanged Eid greetings saying 'Eid Mubarak' and embraced one another in disregard of their social status. Distribution of meat and visiting homes of friends and relations were among the main features of the festival.
This year's Eid-ul-Azha had special significance as the Eid and the New Year 2007 fell on the same day. People exchanged both Eid and New Year greetings simultaneously.
President and Chief Adviser Prof Iajuddin Ahmed said Eid prayer and exchanged Eid pleasantries with the devotees at the National Eidgah in the morning.
Later, he hosted an Eid reception at Bangabhaban for the diplomats and elite.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia exchanged greetings of Eid-ul-Azha with diplomats and cross-sections of people on the LD hall premises of parliament.
Awami League president Sheikh Hasina also exchanged Eid greetings with diplomats, party leaders and workers and commoners at her Dhanmondi office.
